Hilary Benn joins the Every Action Counts programme celebration

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn today joined the celebration of the successful Every Action Counts programme (EAC), which has run over the last three years and he highlighted the new Greener Living Fund, which has just completed its second round of applications and for which grants will be announced in the summer. The EAC programme has inspired thousands of people across England and Wales to take action to help the environment.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has given £4.3m to help 2000 community organisations who signed up to EAC and has trained 800 community champions through the programme. The community champions have been trained to introduce community groups, clubs and organisations to easy environmental actions they can take and help them decide on an action plan.

Hilary Benn said:

“The progress that this programme has shown is really inspirational. We have to make sure we look after the environment that we live in and make the most of our natural resources and Every Action Counts has helped communities across England and Wales do their bit. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make Every Action Counts a success and look forward to working with community groups through the Greener Living Fund.”

The EAC programme was established so Government and not-for-profit, voluntary and community organisations can work together to secure a more sustainable future for communities.

The work with the third sector will be continued through the new £6 million Greener Living Fund. This will help support groups who can help people live in a more environmentally-friendly way. They will concentrate on getting people to reduce their carbon footprint and pressure on natural resources. This is part of Defra’s Third Sector Strategy.
