Political engagement

Yorkshire Forward is one of England’s 9 Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and can be described as a non-departmental government body. We receive ‘single pot’ funding which comes from several government departments to carry out our objectives as outlined in the Regional Economic Strategy

Our work comes under the responsibility of Pat McFadden MP, Minister for Employment Relations and Postal Affairs at the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

We also work closely with our Regional Minister Rt Hon Rosie Winterton MP and Government Office Yorkshire and Humber.

Until recently we have been scrutinised at a local level by the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly (YHA) scrutiny board.

The YHA is a partnership of all local authorities in the region and representatives of various economic, social and environmental sectors. For more information on scrutiny you can go to the Yorkshire and Humber Assembley website.

The Scrutiny arrangements are planned to change this year as a result of the Government’s Sub-National Review (SNR) in the new Local Democracy Economic Development and Construction bill. The YHA is being abolished in April 2009 and a new regional select committee and regional grand committee will be set up, which will have the power to scrutinise a number of regional bodies not just Yorkshire Forward.

Political Relationships

Regional politicians, whether they are Lords, MPs, MEPs, or councillors are important partners in all of our work.

In particular we work very closely with councils to deliver our geographic programmes. We are also in regular consultation with council leaders over SNR.

House of Commons Events

We hold regular events at the House of Commons to ensure MPs and Peers are kept up to date with our work and can raise questions about our work in their constituencies or the wider region. Find out more about July's event in our House of Commons event article.

Party Conferences

Every year our Governance Team ensure Yorkshire Forward have a presence at each of the 3 main political party conferences to inform decision makers about our work and build relationships with political partners. The events are held in conjunction with One North East and the North West Development Agency. Read more about our events over the 2008 conference season in our party conference article.

Quarterly Newsletter and Twice Yearly Economic Briefings

We send out a regular newsletter every 3 months to MPs, MEPs and Peers to keep them informed of the work Yorkshire Forward is doing across the region and in their areas. We also send out an economic briefing every 6 months, which looks at specific aspects of the regions economy by Local Authority Area. We always try to provide constituency level data where possible
