The Yorkshire & Humber Innovation Awards

The Yorkshire & Humber Innovation Awards, launched in March 2008 by Yorkshire Forward with key regional and national supporters, celebrate and reward the amazing innovation and creativity in the region's businesses and universities.

This year’s awards received a record number of nominations, highlighting the sheer amount of innovative work going on in our region. The awards ceremony on 5th March 2009 gave recognition to the most deserving examples.

The Innovator/09 award winners were

Slipstream Energy Ltd – Innovative young company award
Supported by Business Link

Keighley based Slipstream Energy Ltd produces wind turbines. Slipstream strives to reduce the carbon footprint of its products and day-to-day business activities. Wherever possible turbines are manufactured using low carbon processes (e.g. using recycled materials) ensuring Slipstream products have a shorter carbon payback compared to competitors. Each installed Slipstream product will save an estimated 250 tons of carbon.

Medipex Ltd – Innovation catalyst award
Supported by the Institute of Directors

Medipex Ltd is the region’s NHS Innovation Hub, providing technology transfer services to the NHS. The NHS generates 193,000 tonnes of clinical waste every year. Liquid clinical waste is usually land filled in plastic containers – an expensive (£20million pa) and environmentally unsustainable method. Sheffield Hospital developed a system for safe removal of clinical waste to drain rather than landfill. The new system will save £25,000pa, is environmentally friendly and eliminates the need for staff handling.

Central Science Laboratory – Knowledge exploitation award
Supported by Research Councils UK

York-based Central Science Laboratory (CSL) provides research and information services to governments and industry around the world. CSL focus on protecting environmental quality, developing sustainable land uses and safeguarding food chain safety. The Laboratory is an innovative and influential centre of excellence in the sciences.

Yorkshire Water and Brinker Ltd – Product, process, service award
Supported by the Confederation of British Industry

Yorkshire Water manages the collection, treatment and distribution of water in Yorkshire, supplying around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water each day. It also collects, treats and disposes of about one billion litres of waste water. Using Platelet Technology, Yorkshire Water has developed a new product to repair leaks within their pipe infrastructure without excavation in the Highway.

Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation – Open innovation award
Supported by the Technology Strategy Board

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation (IPI) at the University of Bradford is a flagship research facility supporting innovation in drug development and drug delivery. The IPI deploys a unique strategy that uses multiple routes and a wide range of partnerships to create value from its pharmaceutical science expertise, commercial acumen and strong brand, within Pharmaceutical and Healthcare markets.

Simcyp Ltd – International innovation award
Supported by UK Trade and Investment

Sheffield-based Simcyp Ltd provides a platform for modeling and simulation of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) in virtual populations. Currently 9 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies worldwide have access to Simcyp expertise through Consortium membership.
