Emissions of Air Pollutants in the UK

NAEI AEA Technology

This is the website for the UKs National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI). The NAEI is funded by Defra, The National Assembly for Wales, The Scottish Executive and The Department of Environment, Northern Ireland. The NAEI compiles estimates of emissions to the atmosphere from UK sources such as cars, trucks, power stations and industrial plant. These emissions are estimated to help to find ways of reducing the impact of human activities on the environment and our health.

Emission Factor Database

The Emission Factor Database is now updated to 2007 and is available here: 2007 Emission Factor Database. This database contains the emission factors used in the UK Emissions Inventory as well as factors specifically designed for Local inventories.

Emission Statistics are currently being updated and will be available shortly.

Different
types of
Air Pollution
Pollutants that cause increased acidity in the environment (Acid rain). This has harmful effects on ecosystems and causes damage to buildings and crops. The nitrogen containing pollutants also enrichen the soils with nitrogen encouraging the growth of nitrogen loving plants to the detriment of other species Acidification and Eutrophication
Pollutants that cause the earths atmosphere to retain heat and thereby affect global climate Climate Change
Ground level ozone is a toxic air pollutant that is produced from the reaction ofother air pollutants in the presence of sunlight. It damages plants and is a respiritory irritant. Groundlevel Ozone
Atmospheric particulates are a hazard to health and can reduce visability. Particulate formation
Pollutants that can destroy the high altitude ozone that protects the earth from harmful UV radiation Stratospheric Ozone Depletion
Pollutants that are toxic to human health or the environment Toxic Air Pollution
Pollutants survive in the atmosphere for long periods. They can be transported long distances and can have significenthealth and environmental impacts outside the country of origin. Transboundary Air Pollution
