The latest national statistics on final outturn local authority capital expenditure and receipts in the financial year April 2007 to March 2008 were originally released on 20 November 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. This revised version, released on 31 December 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority, incorporates amendments made by two local authorities to their returns.

The key points from the latest release remain:

The underlying trend in capital expenditure (excluding an exceptional event) shows an increase of 12%, from Ł16.3 billion in 2006-07 to Ł18.2 billion in 2007-08.

Local authorities in England estimated their capital receipts to be Ł4.0 billion in 2007-08 compared with Ł3.7 billion in 2006-07, an increase of 9%.

The latest national statistics on the 2nd provisional outturn estimates of local authority capital expenditure and receipts in the financial year April 2007 to March 2008 was released on 18 September 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points from the latest release are:

Capital expenditure by local authorities in England rose to Ł18.6 billion in 2007-08, a year-on-year increase of 14% and is forecast to rise to Ł19.9 billion in 2008-9, a year-on-year increase of 7%.

Capital receipts generated by local authorities in England rose to Ł4.0 billion in 2007-08, a year-on-year increase of 8% and are forecast to remain at that level in 2008-09

The latest national statistics on the final outturn of local authority revenue expenditure and financing for 2007-08 were released on 28 November 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points from the latest release are:

Total net current expenditure by local authorities in England was estimated to be Ł108.2 billion in 2007-08 compared with Ł103.3 billion in 2006-07, an increase of 5%.

37% of net current expenditure in 2007-08 was on education, 17% on social care, 12% on housing benefits and 11% on police.

56% of revenue expenditure (on a non-Financial Reporting Standard 17 basis) in 2007-08 was funded by government grants, 26% by council tax and 20% by redistributed non-domestic rates.

Updated Local authority revenue expenditure and financing England: 2008-09 Budget (Adobe Acrobat 180kb) - Revised 30 October 2008
Updated national statistics on the budget estimates of local authority revenue expenditure and financing for 2008-09 were issued on 30 October 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. This release, and the tables listed below, replace the previous version published on 5 June 2008.
The key points from the latest release are:

Budgeted total net current expenditure by local authorities in England totals Ł112.1 billion in 2008-09, compared with Ł106.3 billion in 2007-08, an increase of 5%.

37% of budgeted total net current expenditure in 2008-09 is on education, 17% on social care, 12% on housing benefits and 11% on police.

25% of budgeted revenue expenditure (on a non-Financial Reporting Standard 17 basis in 2008-09) is estimated to be funded through council tax, 28% through formula grant and 46% through specific grants inside Aggregate External Finance and Area Based Grant.

The latest national statistics on the provisional outturn estimates of local authority revenue expenditure and financing for 2007-08 were released on 29 August 2008 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points from the latest release are:

Total net current expenditure by local authorities in England was estimated to be Ł108.3 billion in 2007-08 compared with Ł103.5 billion in 2006-07, an increase of 5%.

37% of net current expenditure in 2007-08 was on education, 17% on social care, 12% on housing benefits and 11% on police.

56% of revenue expenditure (on a non-Financial Reporting Standard 17 basis) in 2007-08 was funded by government grants, 26% by council tax and 20% by redistributed non-domestic rates.
