NDA Response to National Audit Office Report
30 January 2008
We welcome the National Audit Office (NAO) report and look forward to discussing its recommendations at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing on 25 February 2008.
Historical management of the nuclear legacy has presented the UK with enormous challenges in terms of hazard reduction and cost.
The creation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority demonstrates a serious attempt by Government to tackle this complex issue.
In less than three years, the NDA has developed a detailed understanding of the 19 sites under its ownership and the challenges they present and produced the first UK-wide strategy for dealing with the legacy. It has also managed to ensure the safe, secure and increasingly efficient operation of those sites, delivering £300m more work than budgeted, whilst also driving fundamental change to the industry.
One of our primary roles going forward is to provide a level of certainty for our stakeholders on agreed plans for all our sites. This will require a combination of stable funding, high quality plans and delivery against cost and schedule by our contractors.
Costs of the clean-up programme were always expected to rise in the early years of our evolution as we and our sites formed a greater understanding and more realistic assessment of the task ahead. We remain confident that through innovation and world class performance by our contractors that we will first stabilise and then ultimately reduce the UK's nuclear liability.
