A study of children and young people who present challenging behaviour - literature review
This literature review was commissioned – by Ofsted as part of a large-scale survey to inform the report Managing challenging behaviour. Ofsted commissioned the University of Birmingham to carry out this research to inform subsequent fieldwork. The purpose of this research is to review published material to determine the range of characteristics and definitions of challenging behaviour used by academic researchers and practitioners

Achievement of Bangladeshi heritage pupils
This survey explores the educational experience of Bangladeshi pupils in English schools. The schools were chosen to reflect schools of different types in the local education authorities which have relatively high numbers of Bangladeshi pupils. The proportion of Bangladeshi pupils in the schools ranged from 11% to 59%.

Achievement of Black Caribbean pupils
To establish a fuller basis of information, data from inspections and on attainment and exclusions were analysed for secondary schools with 10% or more Black Caribbean pupils. Based on 2000 data, there were 129 such schools, which between them cater for about 40% of the Black Caribbean pupil population. These 129 schools are referred to as the ‘survey schools’. The 47 schools that were able to respond are referred to as the ‘sample schools’.

Achievement of Black Caribbean pupils: three successful primary schools
This report focuses on three successful schools which provide an environment in which Black Caribbean pupils flourish. The study involved detailed examination of the schools’ data, documentation, pupil records and systems. The first part of the report examines the common features of the schools. The case studies that follow exemplify those features in the different contexts of the three schools.

Attendance in secondary schools
Ofsted undertook a survey of attendance in 31 secondary schools in the summer and autumn terms 2006. Ofsted and the Department for Education and Skills (now the Department for Children, Schools and Families) were concerned about 351 secondary schools whose overall absence or unauthorised absence rates were unsatisfactory. The survey evaluated the impact of the National Strategy in promoting attendance and identified critical factors in reducing and preventing attendance problems in secondary schools.

Community cohesion in Luton
Luton LEA wrote to Ofsted offering to participate in any thematic inspection that might be undertaken on issues relating to LEA provision in areas with large numbers of minority ethnic pupils. This report comments on the success of the council in dealing with the challenge of promoting community cohesion in an ethnically diverse town.

Direct learning support in colleges: a survey of current practice
Many adults and 16- to 18-year-old learners in colleges need extra help to enable them to reach their full potential in their studies. In 2005/06 inspectors from Ofsted and the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) evaluated the quality of the literacy, numeracy and language support learners receive in 29 colleges across the country. The colleges were selected because they had received good or better grades for their Skills for Life provision in a previous inspection.

Evaluation of the impact of learning support units
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) defines the purpose of learning support units (LSUs) as 'school-based centres for pupils who are disaffected, at risk of exclusion or vulnerable because of family or social issues'. This report is based on a survey of the impact of LSUs, carried out by Her Majesty's Inspectors and Additional Inspectors. Between autumn 2005 and summer 2006, inspectors visited 12 units in secondary schools. All 12 of the units inspected were successful in improving the behaviour and attendance of their pupils.
