The Removal of the 20 Member Limit

On 21 December 2002 the Regulatory Reform Order removing the 20 member limit came into force. Statutory Instrument number 2002/3203 repeals Sections 716 (general partnerships etc: limit on number of members) and 717 (limited partnerships: limit on number of members) of the Companies Act 1985.
Main Points
The effect of the Order is remove the 20 member limit which applied, with some exceptions, to partnerships, limited partnerships, unregistered companies and associations, formed for the purpose of gain. These businesses now have the freedom to organise in the way most appropriate to their circumstances.
