This consultation is now closed.

We have reviewed arrangements for the inspection of the FE and skills system to ensure that they are coherent and well matched to the needs of the user and the quality of the service, and that they develop our ability to target inspection where it will make the most difference. Our proposals for a revised Common Inspection Framework and for the inspection of colleges, work-based learning and nextstep from September 2009 are set out in this consultation document.

Arrangements for the inspection of non-association independent schools

Ofsted's public consultation was primarily web-based. It was supplemented by detailed feedback from schools and inspectors who had been involved in the trial inspections which were held in the summer and autumn terms of this year. A small number of respondents chose to write directly to Ofsted giving their views. The consultation followed guidance from the Better Regulation Executive.

Consultation calendar

We have drawn together a calendar of all planned consultation activity taking place across Ofsted until 2009. We are sharing this so that users, providers and stakeholders know our plans in advance and can see what Ofsted will be consulting on, how and when, and what will happen as a result.

The calendar will be updated regularly. Completed consultations will be kept for a year so people can refer back to the findings.

If you have any comments or queries about the calendar, please emal consultations@ofsted.gov.uk

Engagement with Ofsted: a report on the responses to consultation

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 requires us to carry out our work in ways that encourage the services we inspect and regulate to be user focused. In response to this duty, a new user and stakeholder engagement strategy has been developed. The development of this strategy has been shaped by consulting with a wide range of Ofsted’s users, providers and stakeholders between February and June 2008. This report outlines the responses to the consultation.

Impact of Section 5 inspections: maintained schools in England

Ofsted has commissioned the National Foundation for Educational Research to evaluate the new arrangements for school inspection introduced under section 5 of the Education Act 2005. In this pilot study the NFER reports on schools' responses to the changed system. The vast majority of respondents were satisfied with the new inspection, and many found it less stressful than the previous system. Self-assessment, now incorporated into the process, was seen by most as an integral part of school improvement.

A follow-up survey was published in April 2009.

Indicators of a school’s contribution to well-being

This consultation has now closed.

As signalled in the Children’s Plan and in the well-being guidance, the DCSF and Ofsted have been working to develop strong school-level indicators of pupils’ well-being. These indicators will improve the information available to schools to help them assess the well-being issues their pupils face and to evaluate the school’s contribution to promoting pupil well-being. Ofsted will be looking for evidence from all schools on well-being and therefore the indicators will apply to all maintained schools, primary, secondary, special and Pupil Referral Units and to academies.

DCSF and Ofsted have now launched a consultation paper with proposals about those indicators.

Responses are requested by 16 January 2009.
