Arrangements for the inspection of non-association independent schools

This document sets out our proposed new arrangements for the inspection of non-association independent schools, and links to an online questionnaire through which you can share your opinions on them with us.

The current arrangements were introduced in 2003, following the passage of the Education Act 2002. The model of inspection which was introduced at that time has had a demonstrably positive effect on the standard of education in these schools.

Building on the success of these inspections, we are continuing to review our inspection arrangements to reduce the burden of inspection on schools, particularly those which are most successful, whilst maintaining its rigour. At the same time we are intending to incorporate schools' own self-evaluation more into the inspection process.

Arrangements for the inspection of non-association independent schools

Ofsted's public consultation was primarily web-based. It was supplemented by detailed feedback from schools and inspectors who had been involved in the trial inspections which were held in the summer and autumn terms of this year. A small number of respondents chose to write directly to Ofsted giving their views. The consultation followed guidance from the Better Regulation Executive.

Food technology in secondary schools

This report evaluates the effectiveness of provision in secondary schools for food technology within the National Curriculum subject, design and technology. It examines strengths and weaknesses in pupils' achievement and the tension between the teaching of food to develop life skills and using food as a means to teach design and technology. The report draws on inspection evidence collected by HMI between 2003 and 2005 and data from Ofsted's section 10 inspection database.
