Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Germany

Purpose

To advise you of an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Germany.

Background

Following notification by the German authorities of an outbreak of HPAI the European Commission has taken safeguard action to ban/restrict imports of susceptible species and products from the affected area.

Commission Decision 2006/415EC concerning certain protection measures in relation to highly pathogenic avian influenza of the subtype H5N1 in poultry in the Community has been amended by Decision 2008/795/EC, which lays down restrictions from the areas listed in the Annex to the Decision.

Details of the restrictions and how live birds and products are affected are laid down in Decision 2006/415/EC as amended.

This Decision was taken as an emergency measure and will be reviewed shortly.
