Work and Families

Employment law aims to support both employers and working families by providing a framework of rights and responsibilities for both employer and employee.

Guidance on work and families including: maternity and paternity leave and pay, parental leave, part–time working, the right to request flexible working and work life balance issues can be found on Directgov and businesslink.gov.uk:

If you are an employer please refer to businesslink.gov.uk, which provides practical advice on all employment rights for businesses and tools to help employers reduce their paperwork and save time.

If you are an employee please visit Directgov which has information on all employment rights including work and families.

If you require further help Acas operate a helpline to answer individual employment questions that may not be covered by Directgov and businesslink.gov.uk:

  • Acas helpline number: 08457 47 47 47 (08.00 – 18.00 Monday to Friday)

Prospective mothers and their employers may also find it helpful to refer to the leaflets 'Pregnancy and work: what you need to know' which outline the basic rights, responsibilities and obligations for employers and employees.

Employers of prospective fathers may find the best practice outlined in ‘Fathers to be and antenatal appointments’ useful.
