Law Society regulatory powers: response to consultation on draft order

scales of justice

24 October 2008

The government has laid an order amending the Law Society's regulatory powers following a consultation.

On 6 October 2008 the Justice Minister Bridget Prentice sought views and advice on a draft order to amend the Law Society's regulatory powers (under Schedule 22 to the Legal Services Act 2007).

Responses were received from the Lord Chief Justice, the Office of Fair Trading, legal regulators and members of the legal profession, all of whom supported of the order.

Following the consultation period, amendments were made to the order to clarify references to relevant legislation and pre-commencement conduct rules, and the definition of 'legal partnership'.

The revised draft order and a statement on the changes have been now been published, as required under Schedule 22 to the Legal Services Act 2007. Links to those documents and a summary of responses to the consultation can be found below.
