Responsible for working with the Higher Education (HE) sector to ensure that we sustain and develop world-class Higher Education in the UK, including:

  • Building strong relationships across the HE sector;
  • HE teaching quality;
  • Research Assessment Exercise/Research Excellence Framework in HE;
  • Ensuring Higher Education Institutions contribute fully to innovation agenda;
  • Climate change campaign in HE;
  • Higher Level Skills;
  • Voluntary giving;
  • Student support policy;
  • Transition to Customer First;
  • Responsibility for the Student Loans Company;
  • Student loans sale.

Responsible for developing and implementing through the Intellectual Property Office an intellectual property system that promotes creativity and innovation in the UK, including:

  • Delivery of trade marks, patents and registered designs;
  • Copyright Policy Enforcement of IP;
  • Promoting the role of IP in innovation and wealth creation.

Additionally, responsible for:

  • The Department's contribution to Government-wide counter-terrorism work.
