Reform of Public Sector Ombudsmen Services in England

The Cabinet Office has published a Consultation Paper on the Reform of Public Sector Ombudsmen Services in England.

The proposed reforms, which are an important element of the Public Service Reform Programme, will enable the three main public sector Ombudsmen, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, the Health Service Ombudsman and the Local Government Ombudsmen to work together more efficiently and provide complainants with a more effective and streamlined service.

In August 2007 the Regulatory Reform (Collaboration etc Between Ombudsmen) Order 2007 came into effect amending the relevant legislation covering the activities of the Parliamentary Ombudsman, the Local Government Ombudsman for England, and the Health Service Ombudsman for England to enable them to work together more effectively

The reforms set out in the Order have been developed in close consultation with the Ombudsmen and have been subject to public consultation and detailed Parliamentary scrutiny.

Principally, the reforms will enable the three Ombudsmen to work together collaboratively on cases and issues that are relevant to more than one of their individual jurisdictions. This will include undertaking joint investigations where this is appropriate, and issuing joint reports.
