The Highways Agency will help people travelling on the roads this Christmas by suspending or completing more than two-thirds of roadworks on its motorways and major A roads.

A total of 31 sets of roadworks have been completed and a further 30 are being suspended before 6.00 am on Monday 22 December to help drivers make smoother journeys over the busy festive period.

Roadworks at 28 locations will remain in place for the safety of drivers and their passengers.

The move is part of the Highways Agency's commitment to ease congestion, helping drivers to make their journeys safely and reliably.

Derek Turner, Highways Agency Director for Network Operations, said:

"Over the Christmas and New Year holiday people use our motorways and major A roads to visit friends and family, go Christmas shopping and make vital deliveries to shops and businesses across the country.

"The Highways Agency will make those journeys smoother by suspending as many sets of roadworks as we can, and providing up to the minute journey planning advice.

"Our Traffic Officers will be on patrol and working in our control rooms 24-7 throughout Christmas, to help traffic flow smoothly. Our website can help drivers plan their journeys, and by listening to DAB digital 'Traffic Radio', local radio stations, or by calling our information line (08457 50 40 30) they can keep up to date with conditions while they are on the move.

"Before starting winter journeys, drivers should check their vehicle's tyres, oil and water and ensure they are topping up with fuel, as well as checking their route for possible delays and checking the weather forecast. These simple checks are an easy way for motorists to play their part in ensuring driving over the Christmas period is as trouble free as possible."

Roadworks and lane restrictions will be removed by 6.00 am on Monday 22 December and will not be put back before 0.01 am on Friday 2 January.
