I am a civil servant

Recruitment gateway

The Recruitment gateway advertises not only “open competition” jobs but also “service-wide” jobs. These are only available to existing civil servants and other select personnel. It advertises on average 350 jobs a month. To access these vacancies you must first register with the Recruitment Gateway.

Once you have created an account to access the vacancies you can also set up your profile so you receive regular email alerts from the “job notification system” straight to your inbox.

Interchange is the exchange of people between the Civil Service and other sectors of the economy for their mutual benefit. Interchange can take several forms, but the most usual is a secondment for a fixed period.

Leadership development

Most leadership development is the responsibility of individual government departments. This enables programmes to be tailored to the business need of each department and makes the development more closely linked to the jobs people do. In general terms, departmental programmes tend to concentrate on levels below the Senior Civil Service but several departments also offer leadership programmes for their SCS. The National School of Government also provides a number of leadership programmes aimed at all grades.

In-Service Fast Stream

The Fast Stream is the Civil Service’s accelerated development programme. Those who join the Fast Stream are guaranteed a series of intensive job placements designed to prepare them for senior managerial positions

The “In-Service Fast Stream” scheme is an annual competition that is open to all serving civil servants, regardless of age or educational attainment – although a year’s service is normally required. For more information please visit the Fast Stream website

Professional communities

There are several “professional communities” that civil servants can join to help them improve the way they work through learning and development opportunities, tools, best practice and guidance.
