What is the Civil Service Year Book?

The Civil Service Year Book (CSYB) is the definitive official reference for central government in the UK providing the most authoritative source of up-to-date information on the Civil Service. It is the essential guide to the work and structure of the Civil Service in the United Kingdom.

What is included in the CSYB?
  • Key addresses, telephone numbers and contacts for:
    • Ministers
    • Departments and other organisations within the UK
    • Devolved administrations
    • Scottish Parliament
    • Northern Ireland Assembly
    • National Assembly for Wales

  • Detailed statistical information about the civil service

History of the CSYB

In 1935 the 'British Imperial Calendar and Civil Service List' was first published by HMSO. It was subsequently renamed the 'Civil Service Year Book' in 1974. It was produced on an annual basis at first, but changes in the Civil Service meant that the content became rapidly out of date so it is now published twice a year as a printed directory and online.

CSYB 41st edition

Following the very successful relaunch of the CSYB in April 2003, the 41st edition has now been published. It contains an improved index and layout to ensure that it remains the essential one-stop reference tool for anybody looking for information on the structures and personnel in the Civil Service. This new edition has:

  • Free-to-view helpdesk and enquiry numbers for the main departments on the website
  • Improved design throughout to help highlight key information
  • Improved signposting throughout to aid navigation
  • Improved contents pages and indexes, allowing easy searching
  • Online information on all the latest moves within government
The 41st Civil Service Year Book was published on 30 April 2004.
