The Local Governance Research Unit provides professional social research support and advice on a wide range of local government issues. It complements the larger, service-specific research programmes run by other parts of Communities and Local Government or other government departments, eg on housing, planning, urban policies and social services. Further information about the unit can be found under 'about the unit and the research programme'.
Published research can be found via the links below to six broad themes: Cross-cutting issues; Local and community leadership; Local government finance; Patterns of governance, Citizen participation and democratic renewal; Regional government and governance; and Service delivery and improvement. In addition, details of the key evidence underpinning the policies outlined in the 2008 Empowerment White Paper Communities in control: real people, real power, and data analysis undertaken by the unit are also found under the links below.
