Area Based Grant is a general grant allocated directly to local authorities as additional revenue funding to areas. It is allocated according to specific policy criteria rather than general formulae. Local authorities are free to use all of this non-ringfenced funding as they see fit to support the delivery of local, regional and national priorities in their areas.
Government has significantly increased local authorities' flexibility over the use of their mainstream resources by moving over £4bn of grants into the new non-ringfenced Area Based Grant (ABG). This will minimise the barriers to local authorities using their mainstream resources to support local priorities where they wish to do so. In December 2007 we were able to announce the first-ever three-year financial settlement, including the allocation of Area Based Grants, to maximise stability and certainty. The 2009-10 financial year is the second in this three-year settlement.
Revised Area Based Allocations: The revised tables under the, Related Downloads section reflect updates to the following grants:
The tables at the foot of this page were first published in April 2008. To reflect changes to some grant allocations, they have been re-issued and their replacements can be found in the section 'Related Downloads' below. The archive will be removed from the Communities and Local Government website on 31 January 2009.
Please note: Due to ongoing public consultations, Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF) allocations for 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 have been removed from the original table.
