Arrangements for the inspection of non-association independent schools

Ofsted's public consultation was primarily web-based. It was supplemented by detailed feedback from schools and inspectors who had been involved in the trial inspections which were held in the summer and autumn terms of this year. A small number of respondents chose to write directly to Ofsted giving their views. The consultation followed guidance from the Better Regulation Executive.

Being a boarder

Published in 2004, this is the first major study into life in boarding schools by the Children's Rights Director. Almost 2000 pupils and parents were asked for their views, summarised in this report, which reveals that that modern-day boarding schools are looking after children well.

Being a young carer

This 2006 report, based on a workshop organised by the Children's Rights Director, examines the pressures children and young people face while caring for a family member with a long-term illness or disability. Young carers highlighted the need for advice on giving medication; for schools to make allowances for conflicts between caring crises and coursework deadlines; and for social care assessments of young carers' support needs as well as those of the cared-for adult.
