UK Environment for Europe Fund

The UK Environment for Europe Fund is now closed.

The new International Sustainable Development Fund (ISDF) continues to provide support for international sustainable development projects.

Background

In 2007 Defra consulted on a proposal to merge the WSSD Implementation (WIF) and Environment for Europe (EfE) funds to form a new International Sustainable Development Fund.

The UK Environment for Europe Fund was launched at the 5th Ministerial Environment for Europe Conference in Kiev in May 2003.

The broad aims of the Fund were to promote environmental protection and sustainable development in Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia and to support activities of environmental organisations in these countries.

The Fund succeeded the former Environmental Know How Fund created in the early 1990s by the then Department for the Environment and merged with the assistance programmes of the Department for International Development in 1999.

The sixth round of applications in 2006 for Small Environmental Projects Scheme (SEPS) in EU Candidate Countries under the UK Environment for Europe Fund (EfE Fund) has been concluded. The countries eligible for this scheme were Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Croatia and Macedonia. The Project Approval Board (PAB) met on 6 November 2006 and selected nine projects for funding.

Fifth round of applications in 2006: result of PECE Project Board

The fifth round of applications in 2006 for the Partners for Environmental Cooperation in Europe (PECE) also took place on 13 November 2006. The initiative aims to promote sustainable development in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) region from the Environment for Europe Fund. One project was selected for funding by the PECE Project Board.

Priorities for 2005/2006

  • The EfE fund contributes to PECE (Partners for Environmental Cooperation) in Europe by bringing together UK-based organisations from the public sector, business and civil society who have a shared goal to help protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. More information is available at www.pece.co.uk.
