SAC's Epidemic Diseases sub-group (SAC-ED), has been reconvened following the latest outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Surrey. Sub-group members are being kept up-to-date with Defra activity and providing support to the Defra Chief Science Adviser (CSA) as needed.

To review the scientific, including veterinary and social science, aspects of Defra's Foot and Mouth Disease contingency plan and to report back to the Science Advisory Council.

Defra's initial response to the SAC-ED (04) 7 report is as follows: 'This Report of the Science Advisory Council provides valuable input to the development of contingency planning for an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Relevant recommendations will be taken into account in preparation of the Report on Exercise Hornbeam which the department plans to publish in October. The work will also be captured in the next revision of the Foot and Mouth Disease Contingency Plan which will be subject to public consultation prior to being laid before Parliament in 2005.'
