Consultation on proposals for Spirit Drinks Regulations 2008

On 17 December 2007, the EU Council of Ministers adopted a new EC Regulation on spirit drinks replacing the current EC legislation (Council Regulation (EEC) 1576/89 which lays down general rules on the definition, description and presentation of spirit drinks, and Commission Regulation (EEC) 1014/90) which lays down detailed implementing rules on the definition, description, and presentation of spirit drinks. The new Regulation will come into force in 2008.

The UK will need to introduce domestic legislation to enforce the provisions of the new EC Regulation.  UK enforcement arrangements are contained in the draft Spirit Drinks Regulation 2008 annexed to the Spirit Drinks Consultation Document.

We are seeking views on these proposals and the Impact Assessment by 25 March 2008.

At the same time we are consulting on draft UK Regulations making provisions to enhance and safeguard the geographical indication of Scotch whisky.  These provisions are contained in the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2008 annexed to the Scotch Whisky Regulations consultation Document.  Responses to these proposals and the Impact Assessment are also required by 25 March 2008.
