New nuclear power stations

The Government announced they were inviting energy companies to bring forward plans to build and operate new nuclear power stations as part of the future UK energy mix on 10 January 2008.

As a nuclear regulator, we are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) (which includes the Office for Civil Nuclear Security) to assess new nuclear power station designs. Together, we have set up a Joint Programme Office to administer the generic design assessment process.

Latest News

GE-Hitachi request suspension of GDA On 11 September 2008, GE-Hitachi wrote to both the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive requesting that we temporarily suspend our assessment of the ESBWR nuclear power station design. As a result, we have ceased all assessment work on the ESBWR until further notice. The public involvement process, by which the public could view and comment on design information provided by GE-Hitachi, has therefore been suspended for the ESBWR.
