New Communications Director appointed at Communities and Local Government

Published 16 October 2008

Communities and Local Government Permanent Secretary, Peter Housden today (Thursday) announced the appointment of George Eykyn, currently Senior Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and a former BBC News correspondent, as the Department's new Communications Director.

George will take up the post in December, when he will lead the team responsible for developing and implementing wide-ranging campaigns across housing, community cohesion, Fire and Rescue, local government and planning policy.

Welcoming the appointment Peter Housden said:

"The Department is pleased to have secured George for this important role.

"His journalistic background and his knowledge across Government at all levels will add significantly to the Department's work and build on the existing achievements of the communications team."

George Eykyn said:

"Communities and Local Government works at the heart of the big issues facing our country, from cohesion and tackling deprivation to green housing and active citizenship.

"I am delighted to be joining Communities and Local Government at a time when it has created a new framework for local government, empowering local people, and set out practical plans to provide the new green homes Britain needs."

George's considerable experience of press, media and communications dates from the late 1980s as a journalist and presenter across all outlets of BBC News. He covered the wars in the former Yugoslavia and undertook numerous assignments in Central America, Africa, the Middle East and in Europe. He was also a regular news presenter on BBC World TV News, News 24 and Radio 5 Live.

Since leaving the corporation in 2004, George has worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the Government and Public Sector practice, specialising in strategic communication, crisis management, internal communication, and media training for clients across UK national and local Government, as well overseas administrations and leading private sector companies.
