The CBI this week

CBI director-general Richard Lambert In the face of a sharp downturn in the economy in recent weeks, the CBI welcomed the Bank of England’s decision to cut interest rates by more than a full percentage point. The CBI had called for an aggressive cut to help cushion the economy through a difficult 2009.

Following the vote in the European Parliament to remove the opt-out from the Working Time Directive, the CBI urged MEPs to reverse this decision which would stop people being able to choose whether to work more than 48 hours a week.

Cautious welcome for Pensions Bill amendments

Commenting on the changes to the Pensions Bill put forward by the government, CBI head of employment and pensions Neil Carberry said: "The announcement by the government is a step in the right direction.

"If the qualifying test is too complex and bureaucratic, many firms currently offering better provision may be tempted to level down into personal accounts, with employees losing out.

"We hope that the government will consider further simplification measures to ensure this does not happen, as the current proposals are still too complex."
