Receiver of Wreck

The Receiver of Wreck administers cases of voluntary salvage wreck material across the UK to ensure that the interests of both salvor and owner are taken into consideration. This section outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Receiver of Wreck.

  • Role and Responsibilities Web page 
    The main task of the Receiver of Wreck is to processes incoming reports of wreck, in the interest of both salvor and owner. This involves researching ownership, liaising with finder and owner, and other interested parties such as archaeologists and museums

    Around the coast of the UK there are currently approximately 93 wreck sites that are designated as protected wrecks of one level or another. There are three main pieces of legislation under which wreck sites have been protected
  • SS Richard Montgomery Web page 
    The SS RICHARD MONTGOMERY was a US Liberty Ship of 7146 gross tons. She was built in 1943 by the St John’s River Shipbuilding Company of Jacksonville, Florida and was one of over 2700 of these mass-produced vessels built to carry vital supplies for the war effort
  • How to report wreck Web page 
    All wreck material discovered must be reported, however small or seemingly insignificant. It is up to the Receiver to decide whether it is important. The type of material which is reported includes portholes, bells, plates, compasses, fixtures and fittings, bundles of wood, hatch covers, historical and archaeological material such as medieval pots, gold coins, cannon etc.
