The Machinery of Government changes announced by the Prime Minister on 3 October 2008 have created a new Department of Energy and Climate Change. Its Secretary of State will be Ed Milliband.

This new department will assume from BERR responsibility for energy policy - ensuring the supply and efficient use of clean, safe and competitively priced energy and for managing energy liabilities effectively and responsibly. From Defra, it will assume responsibility for climate change. This will create a single department to tackle the twin challenges of energy security and climate change.
