Elections considered for national park and broads authorities

Ministers are seeking views on the possibility of letting people elect some members of National Park and Broads Authorities in England.

Consultation on direct elections to England’s eight National Park Authorities and Broads Authority was promised by Rural Affairs Minister Jonathan Shaw in a debate on the Broads Authority Bill on 7 May.

The National Parks and the Broads attract more than 92million visitors every year and are home to around 200,000 people. They cover eight per cent of England.

National Park Authorities are established under the Environment Act 1995 as independent bodies within the local government framework to manage National Parks.
