Appointment of Master of Churchill College

The Queen has approved that Sir David Wallace Kt DL PhD FRS be appointed to the Mastership of Churchill College, Cambridge, in succession to Sir John Boyd KCMG.

Notes for Editors:

Sir David Wallace (59) has been Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University since 1994 and has recently been named as the next Director of the Newton Institute in Cambridge.  From 1972 to 1979 he was Lecturer, then Reader, in physics at the University of Southampton.  From 1979 to 1993 he was Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Edinburgh where he was also Head of Physics from 1984 to 1987.  He has been chairman of numerous national and international bodies, and has written on theoretical physics and computing.

Sir David enjoys exercise, eating well and mycophagy. He is married to Elizabeth and they have a daughter.

Sir David will take up his new duties upon Sir John’s retirement in the summer of 2006.
