British Museum re-appointments

The Prime Minister has re-appointed Sir Ronald Cohen from 1 January 2009 and Baroness Helena Kennedy from 1 October 2008 as Trustees of the British Museum for a period of four years.

Biographical Notes

Sir Ronald Cohen

Sir Ronald Cohen is Chairman of Portland Capital LLP, The Portland Trust and Bridges Ventures. He was the founding partner and former chairman of Apax Partners. He serves as a Trustee of the British Museum and as a Trustee of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Sir Ronald is a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers, a Vice-Chairman of Ben Gurion University and a member of the University of Oxford Investment Committee.

He was a founder director and chairman of the British Venture Capital Association, a founder director of the European Venture Capital Association and the Quoted Companies Alliance.  He has recently published The Second Bounce of the Ball – Turning Risk into Opportunity about entrepreneurship.
He is a graduate of Oxford University, where he was president of the Oxford Union, an Honorary Fellow of Exeter College, and has an MBA from Harvard Business School, to which he was awarded a Henry Fellowship.

Baroness Kennedy

Baroness Kennedy has spent her professional life championing civil liberties and promoting human rights. She was called to the Bar, Gray’s Inn, in 1972, became a member of the Queen’s Council in 1991 and a Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 1999.  Helena has used many public platforms – including the House of Lords, to which she was elevated in 1997. She has also written and broadcast on a wide range of issues, from medical negligence to the rights of women and children.

  1. The British Museum holds in trust for the nation and the world a collection of art and antiquities from ancient and living cultures. Housed in one of Britain’s architectural landmarks, the collection is one of the finest in existence, spanning two million years of human history.  The Board of Trustees of the British Museum has statutory duties under the British Museum Act 1963 and Museums and Galleries Act 1992 for the general management and control of the Museum and for the appointment of the director.
  2. The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
  3. This re-appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice.  Sir Ronald Cohen has made a recordable donation to the Labour party in the past 5 years and his family charitable trust has made a donation to the British Museum.  Baroness Kennedy is a Labour peer.
