Court of the Bank of England

Court’s role is to manage the Bank of England’s affairs, other than the formulation of monetary policy. The Bank of England Act 1998 provides for Court to determine the Bank’s objectives and strategy, to ensure the effective discharge of the Bank’s functions and, subject to that, to ensure the most efficient use of the Bank’s resources.

The Act creates a sub-committee of non-executive directors, known as NedCo, with statutory responsibilities for keeping the Bank’s performance under review. The Chancellor appoints one non-executive director as chair of NedCo and the current chair is Sir John Parker.

The chair of NedCo earns a remuneration of £12,000 a year, chairs of the various sub-committees earn £9,000 a year and a non-executive director earns £6,000 a year. Appointments to Court are made by the Queen.

The Policyholders Protection Board (PPB) is a statutory body set up under the Policyholders Protection Act 1975 to administer a scheme for compensating policyholders in cases where their insurance companies get into financial difficulties. The scheme is funded by levies, raised as necessary, from the insurance industry.
