Employment Matters - Introduction

Silhouette of workers

Guided by the principles of flexibility and partnership, our aim is to improve the quality of working life for individuals, and create the conditions for business success.

We support better regulation and are working to promote best practice and effective employment relations.

The Employment Matters pages contain a great deal of information and guidance, and to help you quickly find what you are looking for please consider the following sources:

Employees seeking basic advice on employment rights and responsibilities will find the employment section on the Directgov website helpful.

Employers may wish to visit the Business Link website, which provides practical advice for business.

Employment advisers and practioners will find our Employment Guidance helpful. For information on all employment issues including flexible working, national minimum wage, redundancy entitlement and public holidays follow the links provided or search by topic.

Whats's New details recent topical issues.

Our Research and Evaluation pages explain how we provide the evidence base for good policy making and better employment regulation.

Acas also produces a number of useful guidance publications. These include advice leaflets on lay-offs and short-time working, varying a contract of employment, holidays and holiday pay, and bullying. Acas also issues several codes of practice, including one covering disciplinary and grievance procedures.
