Keeping our promises: Delivering education for all

The education Millennium Development Goals aim to ensure that, by 2015, all boys and girls have free primary schooling. Yet, every day 100 million of the world's children will not go to school.  And most who lose out are girls - denied the most basic chance to reach their potential.

On April 10 2006, at the invitation of President Guebuza, the Chancellor and Hilary Benn joined President Mandela in Mozambique to launch a unique campaign - to turn promises on education into reality, school by school, class by class and child by child. They announced that for the first time, Britain will enter into 10 year agreements with poor countries to finance 10 year education plans - locking in the long-term commitment vital to delivering high quality education for all. This £8.5 billon commitment compares to a figure of less than £2 billion over the last 10 years. In addition they announced immediate capacity funding, to help African and other developing countries draw up their ten year plans.
