What is the Service Transformation Agreement?

The agreement sets out an ambitious programme of action that will be the foundation for public services that are more personalised to the needs of citizens and businesses. It places this challenge at the centre of government plans for public service delivery.

The Government launched its progress report on ‘Transformational Government: enabled by technology’ with the news that at least 551 government websites are to be cut to make access to information easier for citizens and businesses.

The Government published ‘Transformational Government: Enabled by Technology’ in November 2005. The strategy set out how effective use of technology designed around the needs of citizens and businesses can make a real difference to people’s lives. This implementation plan describes the actions taken since November and the tasks to be completed by July 2007.

Transformational local government

Representatives from local government on the Chief Information Officer Council and Service Transformation Board have commissioned a discussion paper on the implications of ‘Transformational Government’ for local government. The paper sets out a vision of what might be achieved and a framework for action, highlighting in particular the role that modern information and communications technology can play.

The Government has published ‘Transformational Government – Enabled by Technology’, a strategy for transforming public services using technology. The strategy sets out how effective use of technology designed around citizens’ and businesses’ needs can make a real difference to people’s daily lives.  It is not simply about the internet, but is a far more profound approach that goes to the heart of public services delivery.

The approach has been developed and agreed by the Chief Information Officer Council who actually implement the majority of public sector technology systems.

The Government Chief Information Officer (CIO) Council was formed in January 2005. The CIO Council is the first initiative to bring together CIOs from across all parts of the public sector to address common issues. The Council has the strong support of Government and the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Gus O–Donnell.
