Thank you for your contributions to the work of the CST.
The Government greatly values advice from people with great knowledge
and experience who can give an external perspective on our policies.
We invited everyone here today who has been a member of CST during
its current incarnation. Not everyone could make it, but we do have
represented here someone from every CST sub-group.
Your advice has been influential. Just to take a few examples:
- You recommended that the AHRB should become a research council -
and it will be
- You recommended that every department should appoint a chief
scientific adviser - most have done so and David King and I are
determined that all should do so
- You recommended that there should be a national centre offering
professional development to science teachers - which will start
operating next year
This may not seem an enormous amount to many of you, but getting a
few issues right is more than what most politicians achieve.
CST will be entering a new phase of its existence when it is
relaunched next year. We listened carefully to the advice given in the
quinquennial review - and I thank you for your involvement in this
process.
So today is about not just looking back and saying thank you to CST
members for their advice over recent years. But also looking ahead to a
new CST.
