CSA R&D Budget

The Chief Scientific Advisor has a substantial research and development programme of around £6.5m, which is used to support and add value to the departmental R&D effort. His key priorities include funding strategic and future work – particularly our horizon scanning programme, which includes projects such as alternative future scenarios for Marine Ecosystems and research into the UK Food chain.

We also fund “Seedcorn” research through this budget, which is allocated to research projects in various Defra agencies that support innovative ideas underpinning our mainstream funding agendas. Seedcorn funding is designed to help the agencies develop their own core science capabilities so to keep pace with Defra's changing needs.
