Grants and funding

Grants and funding: Background

This section of the Defra website has been established in the light of Defra’s Funding Streams Review - part of our Modernising Rural Delivery Programme.

That Review found the current rural funding framework to be complex and confusing for our customers and Ministers decided that the many schemes should fit within a simplified funding framework around three major funds linked to Defra strategic objectives. They are:

  • Natural Resource Protection
  • Sustainable Farming and Food
  • Sustainable Rural Communities

This site currently provides funding information in relation to 3 of Defra’s key goals, or Public Service Agreements (PSAs). It will be developed over time to become a comprehensive resource containing information on all funding available from us and our partners in support of our goals.

Defra has 9 strategic objectives or Public Service Agreements (PSAs). These are, in effect a contract between the Department and the Treasury and spell out what Defra must achieve in order to receive resources to carry out our functions.

Whilst some schemes fit logically into a single PSA target, in other cases there may be some overlap. Where this is the case you should be able to find the information from either direction.
