Defra is responsible for the administration of the policy on regional, local and speciality food and the EU Regulations on the Protected Food Names Schemes.

Latest news

• 4 March 2008: Cumberland Sausage, Northern Ireland Beef, and Northern Ireland Lamb final consultation. Comments due by 25 March 2008.
• 20 December 2007: South West of England Beef (pdf 48kb) and South West Of England Lamb (pdf 35kb) PGI applications have been submitted to the commission.
• Consultation for Fal Oysters (29kb), PDO application commences. Any objections should be sent to FFB by  13 March 2008. FFB's contact details are available.

• 4 October 2007: Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese – application has now been submitted to the European Commission
• 28 September 2007: Staffordshire Cheese is the latest UK product to be granted Protected Designation of Origin status
  
• 1 March 2007: new updated protected food name scheme information pack and application forms
