The following pages are a guide to what Defra is doing to ensure priority is given to these standards for welfare of animals on-farm, during transport, at markets and at slaughter.

The independent advisory body Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), provides advice for Ministers on these issues. Details of Government Responses to the FAWC reports are also available.

3 January 2008 - Consultation extended: Consultation on the draft Mutilations (Permitted Procedures) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2008. The closing date for responses has been extended to 7 February 2008. An information bulletin has been published.
