Europe:The Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's (BERR) European work

BERR ministers attend many of the European Union Councils that take decisions on policies directly affecting businesses, consumers and employees – for example, the Competitiveness, Employment, Energy and Telecommunications Council.

BERR is responsible for transposing most legislation originating in the EU, in areas such as technical standards, research, consumer protection, company law and corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, enterprise and industry policy, intellectual property, some aspects of employment law, many measures relating to energy and sustainable development, market liberalisation, trade policy, governance of the structural funds and a number of measures affecting telecoms.

BERR officials therefore work closely with members of the EU Commission, the European Parliament and officials in other Member States to develop policy in these key areas.

A Practical guide to the EU

Last year BERR under its former name of DTI Published "A Guide to Working with the European Union"

This booklet aims to give practical tips to business on how they can have their say in the EU lawmaking process and gives pointers to other sources of information on accessing funding and doing business with the EU.
