Skills in the global economy
This document outlines the impact of global change on the demand for skills and the measures the Government is taking in response to improve the skills of its workforce. Intensifying international competition, accelerating technological change and changing patters of consumer demand are likely to increase the demand for higher-level skills. The document outlines the progress the Government has already made to improve the skills of its workforce and the further measures it is taking to build on this progress: a new National Employer Training Programme so that all low-skilled adults can access training in work and implementation of the New Deal for Skills through new pilots to give the unemployed greater access to training provision and enhanced information and advice. It also announces plans for an independent review to be led by Sandy Leitch, Chairman of the National Employment Panel and formerly a Chief Executive of Zurich Financial Services, to examine the nature of the UK's long-term skill needs of business and the economy.
