The Bank of England's Court of Directors

The Queen is pleased to approve the appointment as Non-Executive Directors to the Bank of England's Court of Directors of:

- Roger Carr
- Susan Rice

The new appointments are in place of Sir Graham Hall and Mary Francis. The Chancellor would like to thank them for the contribution they have made to the Court.

The Queen is also pleased to approve the reappointment as Non-Executive Directors to the Court of Directors for a second term of:

- Sir John Parker
- Sir Andrew Likierman
- Amelia Fawcett CBE

Notes to editors

1. All appointments have been made in accordance with the guidance issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are for a three-year term from 1 June 2007.

2. All Non-Executive Directors to the Court of the Bank of England are appointed in a personal capacity and do not serve as representatives of particular interests or associations. They currently receive a remuneration of £6,000 per year with the chair of the sub-committee of non-executive directors (NedCo) receiving £12,000 per year and chair of various Court sub-committees receiving £9,000 per year.

3. Roger Carr is non-executive Chairman of Centrica, a FSTE 30 company and deputy Chairman of Cadbury Schweppes. He has been Chairman of Thames Water and Chubb and senior non-executive director of Bass. He was Chief Executive Officer of Williams Holdings, a FTSE 100 industrial conglomerate for 12 years to 2000. He was a member of the Advisory Committee to Sir Derek Higgs on the Combined Code of Corporate Governance.

4. Susan Rice is Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Scotland plc. She is also Managing Director within the Lloyds TSB Group responsible for the north of England branch network. She is a non-executive director of Scottish and Southern Energy. She has held positions on a large number of public sector boards in the UK and USA and is currently chair of the Edinburgh International Book festival and of the Scottish Centre for Research on Social Justice and a director of Scottish Business in the Community. She is a member of the Financial Inclusion Task Force.

5. The Bank of England is the central bank of the UK. It is governed by a board of directors known as the Court of Directors, which oversees the operations of the Bank, except its monetary policy decision-making, which is the responsibility of the separately appointed Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
