Housing strategies and reviews

Everyone should have the opportunity of a decent home at a price they can afford, in sustainable communities where they want to live and work.

Communities and Local Government works to provide this opportunity in partnership with local government, the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Key priorities for action

  • More new homes will be built to seek to balance housing supply and demand
  • New home ownership schemes give greater choice and opportunity to first time buyers, social tenants, key workers and people who rent privately
  • All social housing will meet the decent homes standard
  • Home Information Packs will make it easier to buy and sell a home
  • Rough sleeping, and the use of Bed and Breakfast accommodation for families is being tackled. We are now halving the numbers of homeless households in temporary accommodation
  • The housing market renewal programme is transforming areas where deprivation is significantly reducing life chances
  • The Supporting People Programme helps vulnerable people improve their quality of life.
  • Local authorities are best placed to take the strategic housing role for their area. This strengthens their ability to address the housing needs of all of residents.

This section explores existing housing strategies at national, regional and local level and outlines key housing reviews that are underway or have been completed.
