The UK Climate Change Programme

The 2000 UK Climate Change Programme set out a range of policies and measures for meeting the UK's Kyoto Protocol target of a 12.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below base year levels between 2008-2012, and moving towards a domestic goal of a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions below 1990 levels by 2010.

These measures were further developed in the 2003 Energy White Paper, which adopted a longer-term goal of putting the UK on a path to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by about 2050, with real progress by 2020. It also confirmed the Government's aim for renewables to supply 10% of UK electricity in 2010, subject to the costs being acceptable the consumer.

The Government is currently undertaking a review of the Climate Change Programme and will be announcing shortly its plans for publishing a revised Climate Change Programme.
