Career opportunities

HM Treasury’s agenda is vast and ranges from social reform to financial stability at home and abroad; from promoting competition and enterprise to improving public services. Our recruitment initiatives target professionals with diverse knowledge, expertise and experience in the following categories:

Policy Analysts

The Policy Analysts who help to deliver this agenda can make a difference from a very early stage in their career at HM Treasury. We provide career opportunities from entry to experienced levels across different professions including:

  • Economists
  • Statisticians
  • Social Researchers
  • Accountants
  • Lawyers

Our Interchange Programme also offers staff the opportunity to work with other professionals across the public sector and government departments, within and outside the UK. These interchange opportunities are limited and determined by the business case presented.

Corporate Services

Corporate Services spans several functions broadly geared towards identifying, sourcing and providing the knowledge, tools and technology necessary for the effective running of the Treasury. They include:

Human Resources
Information Services
Finance
Internal Audit
Procurement
Communications

HR works closely with Directorates and key offices across the department to guide and advise on innovative people strategies to achieve the Treasury’s world class standards. HR is closely aligned with Learning and Development, which manages the provision of a wide range of internal courses, development opportunities and consultancy on people-related improvement projects and initiatives.

Business Support

Business Support staff are an integral part of HM Treasury. Every team within the Treasury has support staff ranging from Business Support through to Personal Assistants and Project Administrators.

Graduates

HM Treasury is dedicated to providing opportunities for both recent graduates and those with brief working experience. The two schemes available are:

  • HM Treasury Graduate Recruitment Scheme.
This is open to different professions and run annually, depending on the number of available vacancies.
    current vacancies
  • Civil Service Fast-Stream programme.
This scheme is run centrally by the Cabinet Office, and successful applicants will be placed in any one of the central government departments. To apply, you would need a minimum of a 2:2 in any degree discipline and you must be a UK national. The Scheme is run annually from April. For current vacancies across the Civil Service, visit the fast stream website

Summer and gap year students

Each year the Government Economic Service (GES) offers opportunities for students to work in HM Treasury during the summer holiday period or alternatively as a sandwich student for 12-14months. As a student you would provide support to policy analysts or other special projects.

The GES recruits students who are currently studying for a degree in economics or, if it is a joint degree, must comprise at least 50% economics. Candidates must be IT literate and keen to experience working life in a government department.

Each year approximately 25-30 students are offered sandwich student placements. The closing date for sandwich students is usually in October each year for placements starting the following summer.

Summer student placements, lasting 6-12 weeks, are usually advertised in January each year.

To apply, visit the GES website

Work experience

There is no centrally-run unpaid work experience programme at present in the GES. However, individual Departments might offer such placements but you will need to contact them direct.
