Gift Aid consultation

The Government's Gift Aid consultation will examine and identify measures to drive up charitable giving through Gift Aid. HM Treasury will consult with a wide range of charitable organisations through online consultation and a series of regional consultation events.

The consultation was launched on 19 June 2007 at a round table discussion between The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Stephen Timms MP, and the Minister for the Third Sector, Ed Milliband MP and representatives from the charity sector.

Participation of private companies in consultation events

As you may be aware, the Gift Aid consultation team has recently taken the decision to limit attendance to our future events to only charities. This decision was taken after we received several complaints from participating charities at the recent London consultation event that representatives of private companies had approached them before or after the event advertising their fee-paying services, and during the event pushed discussions towards certain areas in which they had an interest. This behaviour limits the effectiveness of our consultation, and risks reducing potential gains for charities claiming Gift Aid.

We felt it was necessary to respond to these complaints in order to protect the integrity of the consultation and respond to the views of charities attending events . We understand that many of you will be disappointed by our decision and accept that only a minority of private companies would have been involved in the activities that caused concern.

We firmly believe that private consultancies have a great deal of experience to offer to the consultation so to ensure we benefit from this experience we urge you to submit your views on Gift Aid in writing. We are also happy to organise a separate event for both private companies and charities to attend if there is a demand for it - please could you email the consultation team on the address below if you would be interested in attending such an event - whether representing a charity or a private company.
