Biography:
Jim Fitzpatrick, MP for Poplar and Canning Town since May 1997, joined the DTI as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Employment Relations in May 2006. He is also Minister for London.
He was previously appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister on 9 May 2005.
Jim Fitzpatrick earlier held the position of Parliamentary Private Secretary to Alan Milburn as Secretary of State for Health from 1999 to 2001. He was also a Government Whip from 2001, and Vice Chamberlain of Her Majesty's Household from 2003 until his appointment as PUSS to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr Fitzpatrick was educated at Holyrood Senior Secondary School in Glasgow. He served as a firefighter for London Fire Brigade, and was a prominent member of the Fire Brigades Union until he took his seat in Parliament in 1997.
He has two adult children and his interests include reading, TV/film and football - he supports West Ham Utd FC.
