The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry jointly chairs the Skills Alliance with the Secretary of State for Education and Skills. The Skills Alliance oversees effective implementation of the Skills Strategy.
Improving the UK's skills base supports the DTI's vision of creating the conditions for business success and helping the UK respond to the challenges of globalisation. We are working to develop workforce skills which enable business transformation and equip people for lifelong employability.
DTI has a strong interest in skills specifically in the context of our departmental objectives of maximising potential in the workplace; strengthening regional economies; encouraging enterprise, business growth and investment; and knowledge transfer and innovation.
DTI co-sponsors the Skills for Business Network with the Department for Education and Skills and the devolved administrations and is therefore heavily involved in the work of the employer-led Sector Skills Councils and the development of Sector Skill Agreements.
DTI also has a strong interest in management and leadership skills, National Skills Academies, regional skills development, and technical and higher level skills.
We are also a sponsor of the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network which is responsible for promoting Apprenticeships to employers of all sizes with the aim of increasing take-up and completion rates.
